I have heard many Spiritual teachers refer to superconsciousness as one stage in meditation. Likewise, many speak of Samadhi as consisting of only one stage. People who talk this way have never experienced deep states of superconsciousness or Samadhi. This is very common. In fact, there are tens of thousands of yoga teacher trainings and meditation courses happening right now on planet Earth led by people who have never experienced superconsciousness let alone Samadhi. How can someone teach Yoga (Samadhi) if they’re never experienced Yoga? I don’t have an answer, but it is perplexing to see so many thousands of people teaching Yoga who have never experienced Yoga. It is like someone trying to describe a beach in Hawaii without ever having been to Hawaii. Or it’s like someone teaching you how to fly a plane that has never actually piloted a plane. One thing is to have a mental concept of superconsciousness and/or Samadhi, but the knowledge gained via direct experience is far superior. Therefore, if you or someone you know is preparing to learn Yoga or meditation from a teacher, the first thing you should ask the teacher is if they have experienced Samadhi (multiple experiences with the various stages of Samadhi is preferable). If not, I recommend to find another teacher. You may be looking for a good, long while. Finding someone who has experienced Samadhi multiple times is not easy and they don’t walk around wearing T-shirts that say “I’m enlightened!”
From my estimates (I will not explain my calculations but they’re based upon the numbers given in the Bhagavad Gita) there are probably only about 8,000 people on the planet right now who are experiencing very high levels of enlightened consciousness. And most of them don’t teach! Therefore, be prepared to exercise patience in your search for a legitimate teacher. However, don’t be disheartened! There are many excellent videos and books available by many famous living and deceased masters that you can use! In fact, it’s probably best to simply read books and watch videos, as it might be difficult to gain personal access to these famous teachers. However, if you are lucky and blessed enough to find a really knowledgable teacher with whom you have access (like my Guru) then consider yourself privileged and take full advantage of your privilege. Immerse yourself fully in their teachings and don’t waste any more time and energy on mundane matters. Superconsciousness is a state of consciousness above or superior to ordinary states of consciousness. You will know when you’re truly superconscious because your mind will be serene, clear, and thought-free. You will feel as though you are superior to that which can be observed. However, there is a preliminary stage of superconsciousness mixed with thoughts or vrittis. In this early stage we can witness the vrittis rising and falling without creating distractions. This is a sort of advanced mindfulness practice where we observe our vrittis without reaction, participation, or identification in a calm, objective manner. The next stage of superconsciousness is also mixed with thoughts, but the thoughts become so subtle and weak that they do not require observing. They simply pass by like signs on the highway that you don’t notice or look at while you’re driving. In the previous stage you might be compelled to look at the signs and you might have to return your attention to the road several times. However, in this higher stage of superconsciousness there is no impulse to look at the signs at all…you don’t really even notice them…they’re just barely there. In the more refined stages of superconsciousness, there are no thoughts, vrittis, or distractions to be observed. In this stage you are the observer without its observations. There is nothing to observe in your field of awareness or chitta. There is no doing…only Being. However, even in this advanced, refined state of superconsciousness, there is something more that must be transcended before we can experience the various stages of Samadhi. Even when the mind is perfectly serene and tranquil, there still exists a sense of individuality. It is this sense of separateness or individuality that must be transcended if we are to know our highest Self. Most meditators never make it to the advanced, refined stage of thought-free superconsciousness. Some experience a thought-free trance like state where they are not alert or aware. This trance state should not be confused with superconsciousness. Trance is an unconscious state and is very different from superconsciousness. In fact, many people who teach meditation have never experienced a prolonged period of thought-free superconsciousness where they are free to probe toward the deeper stages. This is where I generally start my meditation practice. Where many meditators stop their practice in their “peak” experience, I am just getting started. Refined stages of superconsciousness are not concepts to me…I experience them on an almost daily basis. In other words, I’ve been to the beach in Hawaii and can describe it to you from a place of authority. This should be the case for anyone who teaches Yoga and meditation ideally. Otherwise, as Jesus said, “It is the blind leading the blind.” In the most advanced, refined stage of superconsciousness, we can sense that there still exists an individual who is separate. Even in this high state of consciousness, we still feel as though we are an individual. This must be experienced to be properly understood. However, I assure you that it is the case. The question is how can we transcend this limited sense of individualized self. How can we go on to the stages of Samadhi where there is no sense of individualized existence? You must be willing to Let Go… When you feel yourself fully superconscious, wait and probe, wait and probe, wait and probe….then wait and probe some more! Patience and curiosity about your Self is all you need to guide your meditations. Do not become frustrated or bored. Practice to a stage of refined superconsciousness daily (once that becomes possible for you) and wait patiently in the silence and probe deeper. Continue to probe day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. At some point, you will experience a deep and penetrating fear…a fear of death or of losing control. This signifies that Samadhi is near. In order to overcome this fear, you must be willing to let go. You must be willing to lose everything. You must be willing to die. You must be willing to surrender fully to the Divine and completely let your self go. Eventually, your sense of individualized selfhood will disappear and You will just “be there.” In Samadhi there is only a oneness that can not be described with words. It is truly inefable. However, one thing is for sure in Samadhi; there is no sense of individuality. There are various subtle, refined stages of Samadhi as well that I will not go into here. That’s for another blogpost! Just Let Go… Om. Peace. Amen. Si no, recomiendo buscar otro profesor. Debes estar dispuesto a dejar ir ... No te sientas frustrado o aburrido. Debes estar dispuesto a morir.

Sadly, one of the questions that I am asked most often here in Chile has to do with drugs and alcohol. Many seekers ask me if they will have to stop smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol before they can begin practicing Kriya Yoga. In other words, they wish to keep one foot on the sense pleasure roller coaster ride of restlessness and the other foot on the spiritual path of lasting peace. In English we have an expression that aptly describes this situation; “Having your cake and eating it too.”
Due to a surge in interest in Tantra Yoga, many seekers believe that the message of Tantra is just that, having your cake and eating it too. However, my guess is that none of said seekers have ever read a single Tantric text. If so, they would realize that having your cake and eating it too is not a part of the Tantric teachings; quite the opposite is true. Here in the sex-obsessed West, we have completely misinterpreted the Tantric teachings. Most Westerners think that Tantra is all about indulging in sense pleasures and sexual acts to reach ecstatic states. While there does exist a very small sect of Tantric practitioners who do practice sexual rites (usually with prostitutes), drink alcohol, and use drugs, they are but a small minority of Tantric Yogis. These yogis practice what is known as the Left-hand Path of Tantra or Vamamarga. The idea within the left hand path is that the yamas and niyamas (the ethical code of conduct for a yogi) are simply too difficult to follow and that in an attempt to live ethically one creates more restlessness due to frustration with one’s failure to adhere to the guidelines. Therefore, they have decided that rather than try to live a wholesome, ethical life, it is easier to indulge in the sense pleasures and temptations of the world. However, this of course, creates more restlessness and the Tantric Yogi of the left hand path never experiences true and lasting peace. The far more popular right hand path of Tantra is very similar to any other system of classical yoga like Hatha, Jnana, and Raja. It is true that in Tantra the world and body are considered sacred and divine. Some weak minded practitioners use this as an excuse to indulge in drugs and promiscuous sex because they say, “It’s all God, so it’s all good.” However, Tantric teachings never mention the efficacy of turning off all intellectual discernment in an attempt to satisfy mundane desires. Sense pleasures of any kind result in attachment, which results in craving, which results in restlessness, which results in suffering, which results in the identification with the false self, which results in spiritual ignorance, and the cycle continues indefinitely. This is a universal law that will never change, no matter how many clever tricks the mind and ego come up with. I’ve seen many students play incredibly intricate games of mental gymnastics in a vein attempt to justify their drug use. I won’t lie. I find it really entertaining to watch! My mind used to utilize the same tactics on me so I know what to look for. Via a daily superconscious meditation practice we can begin to cultivate peace…a deep and lasting peace. When we are peaceful, there are no desires for sense pleasures or stimulating experiences. We see through the illusion of sense pleasures and realize that they do not last and are not soul satisfying. What part of our Being craves drugs? The ego or false self of course. The true Self has no desires and is always at peace. How can we know where we are on our spiritual enlightenment path? One good measure is to look at how often we crave sense pleasures and also how often we engage in them. If the answer is often, this is a good indication that we still have a very long way to go on our spiritual quest. If the answer is from time to time, this is an indication that we are evolving. If the answer is almost never, this is a clear indication that we are fairly far along and that we are nearing the permanent and lasting peace that the Buddha called Nirvana. It must be said, I am far from perfect. I like to indulge in a sense pleasure or two on occasion. However, sense pleasures no longer control my life and I am not subject to their tempting power. I no longer allow my mind to play mental gymnastics to justify their use. Instead, I now have power over them. I can choose to indulge occasionally without the unconscious compulsion that used to drive me when I was still on auto-pilot without control over my reactions and cravings. I tell my students that they may continue to use drugs when they start Kriya, but that if they practice everyday with discipline they will begin to notice the subtle (sometimes not so subtle) effects that drug use has on their meditations. They will begin to notice the dulling and tamasic effects of drugs on their brains, bodies, and nervous systems. After a while, with a daily practice of Kriya, they will begin to realize that they are more peaceful without drugs because the restlessness that used to dominate their psyche is beginning to dissipate. What’s more peaceful, the “peace” that we feel after a few beers, or the authentic peace that we feel when we realize we have no desire to drink a beer because we’re already so naturally at peace? OM. PEACE. AMEN. The Guru is like a spiritual parent. Just like your parents are there for your first lost tooth, your first date, your first broken heart, etc., so too is the Guru there for all your spiritual firsts. I remember the first time I had an experience with Kundalini, the first time my brain produced Soma, the first time I had an out of body experience, the first time I experienced Samadhi, etc...Who was there to guide me through ALL those firsts? My Guru, Roy Eugene Davis. I can't express with words how lucky I feel. Many people on a spiritual path flounder around for many years or decades without any guidance and usually without much progress. That's because they lack a spiritual mentor or guide that can lead them to the promised land. Just as a blind man needs his cane to find his way around, so too do the spiritually blind require a Guru to guide them toward the light. Otherwise, as Jesus said, "It's the blind leading the blind."
When Mr. Davis ordained me a minister in the lineage of Kriya Yoga masters, I was not prepared spiritually or mentally for the great responsibility...maybe I'm still not. For anyone who thinks being a spiritual teacher is easy and fun, think again. Now that I have a few years of experience being a spiritual teacher in this tradition, I have developed so much more respect for Mr. Davis and Yogananda and all spiritual teachers to be honest. I can't imagine what Guruji had to go through. He left SRF at a very early age and started his own ministry and organization. I'm sure he faced many challenges and naysayers. Most people have no idea the amount of courage that is required to be a spiritual teacher or Guru. One must be ready to suffer the verbal and energetic slings and arrows that come with the territory. It's much easier to be a hermit living in a cave or a monastic huddled away in a monastery or ashram than it is to be an active teacher working and living in the real world. I have encountered many seekers over the years who claim that they choose not to teach out of a sense of humility. But I have often wondered if they really choose not to teach out of some sense of false humility or if they are actually simply just afraid. After Guruji's passing I feel as though I am on my own. It feels like someone turned off all the lights. I was lucky enough to study closely with Mr. Davis for over a decade, but my Realization is not complete and now I have no one here to guide me to completion. Of course, I can read Guruji's books or remember the advice he gave me over the years, but it's not the same as visiting him in his ashram and spending time in his physical presence absorbing his elevating Shakti-pat. The path is nuanced. Mr. Davis was always there to guide me through the nuances and subtle gradations of enlightenment. Now I must continue on my own with only my intuition and the natural evolutionary forces of God's grace to assist me on my journey. I should have worked harder while Guruji was still with us so that I could have taken fuller advantage of his spiritual genius. Now I am forced to suffer the consequences of my spiritual lethargy and negligence. The most important lesson that Guruji ever taught me had to do with emotional maturity. He taught me that the vast majority of my problems and challenges are due to my personal choices, habits, patterns, and behaviors. It was a tough pill to swallow when I realized that I could no longer play the blame game and that I had to take personal responsibility for my life. What I didn't realize earlier on in life is that emotional maturity is a prerequisite on the spiritual path that most seekers take for granted. Without the cultivation of emotional maturity, our progress on the enlightenment path is slow and frustrating. A huge part of emotional maturity is not relying on the Guru for personal happiness. Emotional dependency on the Guru is a substantial obstacle in our awakening. However, I must admit that it was difficult not to become emotionally attached to Mr. Davis. How can we not become attached to the person who awakens us spiritually and greatly diminishes our suffering? I have met many people on a spiritual path who say that the era of the Guru is over (none of whom appear to be experiencing elevated states of consciousness and Being). This naive sentiment is nothing more than trendy new-age rubbish. Many people think that we need only work with the "inner Guru." However, what they don't realize is that we must first work with the outer Guru before we can develop "the ears to hear" what the inner Guru is saying. People will, of course, always require teachers and guides on the spiritual path. This basic fact of life has not changed for millennia and will never change. I agree that truly enlightened teachers with no ulterior motives are getting harder and harder to come by. However, they do exist. They are rare, but they do absolutely exist. If you are lucky enough to encounter a true Guru in your lifetime, hang on as though your life depended on it...hang on like it's a solitary life raft in a tumultuous and treacherous sea. Jai Guru! OM. PEACE. AMEN. Jai Guru! OM PAZ. AMÉN. I am often asked by my students about my beliefs regarding various metaphysical subjects. They are generally surprised to hear that I hold very few beliefs. In fact, I have come to see beliefs as a great obstacle in the path to enlightenment. Beliefs have also been the cause of many wars and global conflicts that continue to this day. Most people mistakenly assume that beliefs are a spiritual phenomenon when they are, in fact, a mental phenomenon. What is a belief? A belief is a thought. What is a thought? A thought is an electrical signal firing between neurons in the brain. Why have we placed so much importance on the mental phenomenon of beliefs in our spiritual and religious traditions? It seems as though most religious traditions start with the great mystical teachings of a spiritually awakened master. Afterward, his or her spiritually ignorant followers inevitably create personality cults based upon the worship and adoration of the teacher rather than trying to become like the teacher. My spiritual teacher has often said, "Don't be a believer, be a knower." It is far superior to know something in the center of your Being via direct experience rather than to believe something at a mental level. Beliefs do not help us much on the awakening path. The belief that the guru or avatar that you follow is fully enlightened, for example, will have literally zero effect on your own enlightenment. Likewise, beliefs about heaven and hell will have no effect on your actual after life experience. Beliefs alone will not awaken your kundalini/holy spirit and prepare you physically and energetically for higher states of consciousness. Beliefs will not end your suffering or change your bad habits. Beliefs will never satisfy you spiritually....only direct experience of the Divine via a disciplined superconscious meditation practice will result in real spiritual progress and lasting soul satisfaction. Mystics of every religious tradition have always set themselves apart from the confused masses. All mystics understand that beliefs and mental phenomenon are fleeting and insubstantial. Mystics understand that words and thoughts can not describe or explain the Divine. As mystics, we instead attempt to transcend all thought and language so that we may find the Divine in the stillness of our tranquil Being. The Divine is experienced beyond the changing vibratory realm of words and beliefs. Through a daily superconscious meditation practice, we can begin to calm the distractions and fluctuations in our Being that obscure the reality of God that is always present in the deep stillness. OM. PEACE. AMEN. Since I started teaching spirituality and meditation over a decade ago I have seen many spiritual fads and trends come and go. Many spiritual shoppers become infatuated with every new technique, practice, book, and philosophy that comes on to the scene. I have observed that the vast majority of seekers waste an enormous amount of time exploring topics such as astrology, tarot, past life recall, ascended masters, channeling, psychedelic drugs, magic, energy healing, psychic readings, etc...None of these things bring us any closer to enlightened consciousness. In fact, all of these forms of spiritual entertainment distract us from the goal of awakening fully in our current incarnation.
Most people want to know more about their self, instead of wanting to know about their Self. Through the various forms of spiritual entertainment available to seekers, one can learn more about their finite false self. However, more knowledge of the finite false self will not lead one to the disidentification with the finite false self that is the goal of true spirituality. It will only add layers to the finite false self that one must ultimately transcend later on. It is entirely counterproductive and antithetical to the spiritual enlightenment path. Spiritual entertainment is very alluring. It promises sense pleasure and excitement. However, temporary sense pleasure and excitement only lead to the desire for more temporary sense pleasure and excitement. One is never satisfied. Spiritual entertainment is like a drug that one becomes addicted to and only results in restlessness. The objective of the spiritual path is permanent and lasting peace. Spiritual entertainment never leads to peace, only more restlessness, and subsequently more suffering. The permanent solution to the problems associated with the human condition is complete spiritual awakening. The only way to awaken spiritually is to disidentify with the finite false self and unite one's attention and consciousness with the true permanent Self. The true Self is infinite loving consciousness that never suffers, changes, or dies. It was never born and it will never cease to be. It is always whole, pure, and tranquil. It has no desire or need to be entertained. Therefore, a good test to see where one is at along their awakening path is to check periodically on what techniques and practices one is interested in and attracted to. If one is continually drawn to techniques that only result in entertainment and temporary pleasure, it is an indication that one is still spiritually immature. On the other hand, if one is only attracted to superconscious meditation practice that results in spiritual enlightenment and nothing else, this is a good indication that one has reached a level of spiritual maturity and is ready to leave spiritual infancy behind once and for all. OM. PEACE. AMEN. The Sanskrit word Soma has many different meanings. It is mentioned in the Vedas as a sacred drink derived from various plants and herbs used during religious ceremonies. It is also associated with the moon and is used generally and liberally to describe lunar or feminine energy. However, in this article, I wish to describe Soma as the divine nectar that is produced in the brain during refined states of superconsciousness. Although this is the most important and least understood definition of Soma, it is rarely discussed. This is due in part to the fact that so few people actually produce this nectar and therefore cannot speak intelligently from direct experience. I produce Soma every time I meditate and chant Sanskrit mantras. Sometimes, I produce the nectar long after my meditation session is over...often times my brain secretes it all day. It has become a normal part of my life...so much so, that often times I am not even aware of its presence in my mouth and body. As a matter of fact, as I began to write this article Soma began to drip into my mouth! Soma is like that...
The word Christ is derived from the Latin word Christos. Christos is roughly translated as "one who has been anointed by the sacred oil." Due to a lack of illumination on the part of modern Christian scholars, it is believed that the oil that is referred to in the word Christos is a physical oil used during ancient Hebrew sacraments and purification rituals. This is a complete misinterpretation of the word based on a purely exoteric understanding. In order to truly understand Christos, one must have an esoteric understanding of what it is to be anointed with sacred oil. The sacred oil referred to in the definition of Christos is none other than Soma. The ancient mystics of the West such as the members of the Essene community of Qumran referred to Soma as the sacred oil produced in the head of one who had attained Christ consciousness or enlightenment. It is true that there existed outward exoteric ceremonies of purification and blessing with physical oils being poured over the heads of initiates, but this was a symbolic act that represented the more esoteric experience of the actual internal secretion of the divine nectar from within that occurs during exalted states of superconsciousness and Samadhi. No one knows for sure where Soma is produced in the brain. In the Yoga tradition, it is said that Soma is created within the Bindu, which is a sacred point located within the brain. There are also many who theorize that Soma is produced in the pineal gland. There is very little research to verify any of these claims because it is difficult to find research subjects because so few people actually produce Soma regularly enough to be studied in a proper scientific context. However, it is of little importance. It does not matter where it is produced, only that it is produced at all. God bestows upon us many gifts or divine rewards for our disciplined spiritual practices. John Tauler, a German Christian mystic of the 14th century, describes these gifts as "jubliatio." Jubilatio are the experiences of bliss, ecstasy, kundalini, and other pleasurable sensations that one can experience after long periods of disciplined spiritual practice. Tauler describes these experiences as being allurements or enticements that we are given by the grace of God so that we stay motivated to continue on our path. Jublilatio is the sweet recompense from the Divine for our spiritual labor. In my experience, Soma is an integral part of this Jublilatio. Soma is produced in the brain and drips down into the mouth of the practitioner and mixes with the saliva already present in the mouth. The flavor is not always consistent and it is not worth trying to describe it. Over time when one begins to produce large amounts of Soma, one can swallow the nectar at which time it begins to convert into Amrita in the rest of the body. Amrita is a Sanskrit word generally translated as ambrosia. Amrita is absorbed into the cells of the body and creates a sensation that is impossible to describe with mere words. It is a subtle ecstasy that flows over the entire body and can be felt as waves of ambrosial light purifying and illuminating the physical body. When the amrita is flowing copiously we feel as though our body is somehow being spiritualized and that the dense form of the physical body is ascending to another dimension or vibrational reality. God definitely rewards us for our spiritual labor. This is the great promise of a long term disciplined meditation practice. Don't be a part time yogi! Go all the way in your current incarnation...every moment is a precious opportunity for awakening, bliss, love, and light! OM. PEACE. AMEN. ¡No seas un yogi part time! The evolution of the word asana is largely misunderstood, even by many Indian scholars. Most people think that the practice of asana is very ancient and has its roots in the Vedas. There is no mention of the word asana in the Vedas nor is there any mention of any type of posture practice. Even in the more recent Upanishads, the word asana simply means a meditation seat or cushion and has no relation whatsoever to the modern meaning of the word. In Patanjali's Yoga Sutras (the most important treatise on Classical Yoga written in approximately 200B.C.) the word asana means a comfortable, seated meditation posture. Only much later in the texts of Hatha Yoga around 1400A.D. do we find the word asana being used to describe multiple postures and finally taking on its modern significance.
During the post-classical era of Yoga history, various asanas were developed in a systematic way to help prepare the body for the deeper practices of pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana, and Samadhi. However, if one attends a modern yoga class in any major city in the world, they will soon discover that the deeper, or internal practices of yoga are missing. Most modern yoga classes are simply asana classes. So the question arises, what is asana preparing us for? If asanas were developed to prepare the body to sit for long periods of time in deep meditation and we are not meditating after our posture practice, then what is the purpose of asana? Without being judgmental, I have observed that many people practice asana to fit in and feel a sense of belonging to a particular sub-group. It has become trendy and fashionable to practice yoga. There exists an entire industry of clothing manufacturers solely dedicated to producing yoga apparel. There is a yoga music industry now that caters to the yoga community or sub-group. Over the last ten years, there has been a steady increase in the amount of people getting tattoos with Sanskrit letters, chakras, and other yoga related designs. One gains social currency within groups of friends for attending yoga classes. These are all indications of the emergence of a sub-group of the general population that has its own sub-culture just like punks, hippies, metal heads, sports fans, yuppies, etc...And just like any other sub-culture, one's value within the group is determined by one's adherence to certain norms and mores. One of the most important norms of the yoga sub-culture is the subtle competition between its members to ascend the social hierarchy. One does so by accomplishing more and more difficult and complicated asanas and then showing everyone their accomplishments on social media, mainly via Instagram. The original purpose of asana has been distorted and corrupted by the emergence of the yoga sub-culture in the West. The purpose of asana is not to belong to a sub-group or to impress friends with complicated postures. Belonging to a subculture adds layers of identity to our false self. The purpose of yoga is to disidentify with the false self. The purpose of asana is to stretch the muscles and relax the body in preparation for meditation. It is recommended to learn a simple sequence that lasts from 30 minutes to one hour. Afterward, one should practice pranayama for approximately 10 minutes, and then meditate with whatever technique one prefers until one reaches a state of superconsciousness. In a state of superconsciousness we realize that we are superior to the temporary false self composed of the body, mind, and personality. We transcend our false self that is subject to suffering and spiritual confusion. Over time, with disciplined practice, we merge our attention and awareness with our true essence and we end our suffering and spiritual confusion permanently. OM. PEACE. AMEN. People often report that during episodes of near death experiences they encounter a sense of freedom, bliss, and peace that is indescribable. They also claim that they experience an expansion of consciousness, see a bright light, and feel a disassociation with the physical body and personality with all its baggage and karma. Many of these people mention that they would like to return to this state of being because it is a state without suffering or worry. Little do they know that they can experience this "death" everyday during a superconscious meditation practice.
During a near death experience, the person having the experience is still completely conscious and aware. This indicates that our existence is not tied to the survival of the body. What we actually are at our core continues when the body is no longer viable. Due to the lack of spiritual education in our materialistic society, people do not know that meditators can experience the death of the limited self on a daily basis during superconscious states. One need not nearly die to experience the disidentification with the body, personality, mind, and ego. It is unfortunate that more people are not aware that they can access a heavenly state of divine peace, stillness, and tranquility on demand. This, of course, requires practice...often times years of practice. When I first began to meditate, I wrote the phrase "Yogis die daily" on a small sheet of paper and placed it on my altar. This was a constant reminder of the purpose of my practice...death. The death that we experience during meditation is not the death of the physical body, but it is a death. Or more precisely, it is a cessation of the identification with the mind and its contents, the body, the ego, and the personality...the small sense of limited self...the self that is subject to suffering and spiritual confusion. Many of my meditation students report that they often times experience a deep and penetrating fear while meditating...this usually occurs when they begin to have their first "deep" meditations. This fear is normal and natural and is an instinctive, survival response. The ego literally believes that it is going to die. Therefore, it revolts and panics and does anything within its power to regain its stanglehold on one's identity. However, one must transcend this fear of death to elevate one's consciousness beyond identification with the finite body/mind/personality composite. For some, this requires years of dedicated practice. For others, such as myself, it occurs automatically without any trepidation. There is a great surrendering that occurs when we begin to disidentify with the limited self. We must be willing to die in order to reach the Infinite bliss of God-communion. Surrender...let go...go beyond... OM. PEACE. AMEN. OM. PAZ. AMÉN. In my talks and presentations, I often mention the concept of "objective vision." However, vision might not be the most appropriate word to use in describing this state of consciousness. Perhaps perception is a more accurate choice due to its broader implications. My spiritual teacher describes objective vision as "dispassionate objectivity." The Zen Buddhists refer to it as "no-mind." The reason this state of consciousness has many names is because it is almost ineffable. Words cannot do it justice, because it is beyond words, beyond concepts, beyond labels...
Most scientists would agree that we live in a vibratory universe. String theory, although as of yet unproven, describes the universe as being composed of vibrating particles known as strings. Everything we perceive as being solid is, in fact, constantly vibrating. Nothing is ever still. All form is manifested out of vibrating waves that are in constant motion. All is in flux...unceasingly moving and changing. Nothing in the manifest realm is permanent and nothing is ever at rest. The modern science of cymatics demonstrates the process by which form is created from frequency. When sand is placed on a metal plate on top of a speaker and vibrated at different frequencies, specific geometric patterns begin to take shape and emerge. Each frequency/vibration creates different, unique shapes and patterns. Matter and form derive from sound. The universe is a grand symphony...the universe is God singing and we are all notes in Its divine song. The five senses of the human organism perceive the vibratory universe as a solid reality. The mind interprets, organizes, and labels the objects of the senses. These interpretations and labels become our experience of the world. We create likes and dislikes, attachments and aversions, pleasure and pain based upon our interpretations and labels. The mind becomes the arbiter of our experience of the fleeting vibratory universe. When the mind labels something as "good," we experience momentary happiness. Likewise, we experience suffering when the mind labels something as "bad." These labels are completely arbitrary when we awaken spiritually...when we begin to cultivate objective vision. In the early stages of the enlightenment process, we generally begin to avoid "bad vibes" and we are naturally attracted to "good vibes." This is because the mind has not yet experienced stillness or objectivity...there are still vrittis. Vritti is a Sanskrit word meaning fluctuation, movement, or vibration. However, as we progress on the spiritual awakening path, we begin to notice that vibrations are just vibrations. A wave is a wave. Energy is just energy. There is no labeling. There is no interpretation. There is no reaction. There is no participation. There is no identification. There is no attraction to "good vibes" and avoidance of "bad vibes." We see through the illusory nature of reality created by the mind's interpretations and labels. We see the universe as it is without the distortions of the mind's judgements. There is no judgement of vibrations as they occur. We cease seeing things subjectively through the mind's conditioned, programmed awareness and we see things objectively as they truly are. With objective vision, we experience happiness and sadness as the same. They are just vibrations occurring in the universe. Pain is no different from pleasure...they are both just vibrations occurring in the universe. In this state of objective tranquility, there is no suffering. We exist as an objective observer or witness of the vibrations occurring in and around us without reaction, participation, or identification. There is only silent, peaceful observation...stillness amongst the vibratory noise. Objective vision brings about a supreme freedom that cannot be described with mere words. It must be experienced directly in our being to be fully understood. When I look out at the world, I just see stuff vibrating....because that is all that is actually happening...stuff is just vibrating. There is no judgement, there is no reaction, there is no labeling, there is no suffering, There is only a deep peace beyond description. This is the great promise of meditative practices...deep, lasting peace that surpasses all understanding. OM. PEACE. AMEN. |
