One of my favorite things to witness during my presentations and lectures is the reaction that occurs when I mention that spiritual enlightenment is a physiological process. I love to see the looks of confusion, shock, and bewilderment on the faces of my students afterward. The vast majority of seekers assume that enlightenment has little or nothing to do with the physical body. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, enlightenment has a great deal to do with the physical body, especially the brain and nervous system. Where does enlightenment actually occur? Obviously, we are multi-dimensional beings that exist on many levels. Therefore, when we experience elevated states of consciousness all of our layers, or Koshas are involved. However, there is a tendency for seekers to believe that the enlightenment process is entirely energetic and that it takes place entirely in the energetic layer of our Being that contains chakras, nadis, dormant energies like Kundalini, etc...This is only part of the picture. To fully understand the enlightenment process, we must understand how the changes that occur in the physical body affect the rest of our Being. Without these important changes on the material level, we can not expect to experience the effects that occur in the deeper layers of our Being. Paramahansa Yogananda predicted the future science of neuroplasticity 70 years ago, long before any neuroscientists had any idea that it was possible to change the structure of the brain via intention and habit patterns. He wrote about how daily meditation rewires our brain to facilitate higher states of consciousness in the 1940's. He was a true visionary...possibly the greatest spiritual intellectual of the last 100 years. I can remember feeling a distinct sensation during the first year of my meditation practice...it was as though the hands of God were manipulating the innards of my brain, cleaning and rerouting areas of my cerebral matrix so that I could more easily experience Divinity. I asked my Guru, Roy Davis, about this and he told me it was a normal sensation to have and that almost everyone who experiences deep superconscious states experiences something very similar. This is why it's so important to have a highly knowledgeable spiritual teacher available to answer one's questions and clarify one's doubts. Through the process of neuroplasticity, we begin to rewire the brain in very important ways. For example, there is an increase in frontal lobe activity that occurs during deep meditative states that results in an increase in the actual size of the frontal lobes. Meditators who have meditated daily for ten years or more tend to have frontal lobes that are 20% larger on average than non-meditators. The frontal lobes are responsible for concentration, will-power, self-control, creativity, and intellectual discernment. All of these qualities are vital to possess as we progress on our spiritual path. As we begin to improve these qualities in ourselves, we begin to experience higher and higher states of consciousness and being. Furthermore, via a daily practice of meditation we also begin to turn off the reptilian brain, which is responsible for fear, anger, and animal instincts and impulses. As we decrease these negative qualities, we begin to experience our higher selves with far greater ease as we become less likely to be drawn down into lower states of consciousness and Being. Without these important neurological changes, spiritual enlightenment is impossible. Another important physiological change that occurs from a daily meditation practice has to do with the nervous system. As we practice pranayama and superconscious meditation frequently, we begin to activate the parasympathetic side of our autonomic nervous system more often, which is responsible for the relaxation response in the body and brain. The other side of our nervous system, the sympathetic, is responsible for the fight, flight, or freeze response, which is associated with the release of adrenaline and cortisol. Due to the stress of the modern lifestyle, our sympathetic nervous system is greatly over stimulated, which leads to inflammation and many modern diseases. When the body and nervous system is stressed, it is difficult to relax and experience profound states of superconsciousness. When the body and nervous system is relaxed and refined, it is far easier to minimize distractions that prevent us from experiencing our true, infinite Self. We should stop thinking of the enlightenment process as being something energetic and subtle. While this is partly true, it leaves out a large part of the actual process, which occurs on a physical, tangible level. For this reason, it is important to treat the body with care and self-love. Our diet and exercise routines are just as important as our daily meditation practice...they complement one another. If we are eating junk food and sitting around all day, we can not expect to have excellent meditative experiences. Our bodies are divine templates of awakening. Our bodies are literally designed for spiritual enlightenment. Only humans have the potential for elevated states of consciousness and being due to our highly developed and evolved brains and nervous systems. We have been given an amazing gift...it is our responsibility to take full advantage. OM. PEACE. AMEN.
