In the Yoga teacher trainings that we offer through our school Vinyasa Yoga Chile, I typically give a brief introduction to Ayurveda. Before my presentation, our students are asked to fill out a Dosha test to determine their dominant Dosha (basic mind-body constitution). I am always surprised to see the level of excitement in our students when I announce that they will find out their Dosha. Their faces light up and they are genuinely gleeful. The opposite occurs when I present on meditation. They stare at me with dull eyes and show a complete lack of interest (there are a few exceptions in each training of course). The vast majority of people wish to know more about their self, and have no interest in knowing more about their Self.
It's fascinating to me that most seekers are so interested in finding out more information about their false self that will soon die, and have very little interest in discovering their true Self that lives forever. From my perspective, it is somewhat shocking to observe. However, it is the nature of the ego trapped within the illusion to continually identify with itself, not knowing that the self with which it mistakenly identifies is an impermanent illusion that is constantly in flux and eventually dies after a few decades. The spell of Maya is powerful and alluring and should not be underestimated. We must remain constantly vigilant of its tricks and deceptive tactics. Another trick of Maya that I have noticed lately is the fascination that seekers have with discovering their past lives. The spiritual path is the process of the disidentification with the false self. It is a difficult process that generally takes many years of dedicated and disciplined superconscious meditation. Why anyone would wish to add more layers of false identity that must later be transcended is beyond me. It's hard enough to transcend the layers of identity that we already have; adding more layers of identity to transcend seems ludicrous, and yet it is wildly popular amongst spiritual seekers. Many people spend their hard earned money to get hypnotized by someone to experience "past life recall" so that they can know about their past life experiences. In fact, I am almost certain that if one were to do a survey asking seekers whether they would rather spend their money on a past life recall session or a meditation retreat, they would almost all choose the past life recall session. I could be wrong... More knowledge about one's false self will only help them have a slightly more comfortable Earth existence in their current body. It will not result in soul satisfying experiences that lead to enlightened states of consciousness. My Guru, Roy Eugene Davis, always told me not to get "sidetracked." He said that I should always keep my eyes on the ultimate goal of the spiritual path and not become distracted by the shiny objects off to the sides. In fact, he often repeated the last advice that Yogananda gave him, which was, "Don't look to the left or the right...look straight ahead and go all the way in your current incarnation." Many people waste so much precious time and energy looking to the left or right instead of keeping their attention on the ultimate goal of the spiritual path, which is complete awakening in this current lifetime. OM. PEACE. AMEN.
